Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the diseases that has shown the greatest increase in mortality rates in recent years, being the fourth cause of death worldwide since 2000, and it is estimated that by 2020 will become the third cause. In Colombia, the PREPOCOL1 study carried out in 5 cities of the country showed a prevalence of 8.9% based on spirometric data, a little lower according to data reported in countries such as Spain or Korea, however it is important to determine not only the impact of the disease, but also to evaluate the risk factors associated with the greater frequency of exacerbations, as well as the description of the degrees of severity based on objective methods that allow an early intervention in the natural evolution during care in the emergency services. The importance of avoiding exacerbations in COPD is given by the limitation in the decline in FEV1 after each event, the decrease in the rate of hospitalizations and the need to consult the emergency services with each episode, which indirectly decreases the global burden of disease and the total costs of respiratory disease, with almost 53% of expenses derived from care only for COPD.eng
