dc.description.abstractenglish | Mental health experts are traditionally required to provide advice on the dangerousness of mentally ill people who come into contact with the justice system. The way of carrying out the evaluation task and its conceptualization evolved over time. Common errors in practice were recognized in a timely manner, highlighting unsystematization, impressionistic evaluations and lack of knowledge of basal rates. The conceptualization evolved by postponing the legal-political significance that underlies the codes when using the word dangerousness, and opting for a more clinical-epidemiological model focused on risk assessment. In recent years, the predictive power of psychopathy has been measured, baseline rates of violence and recurrence rates over long periods have been estimated, actuarial models and schemes have been produced that guide the clinician in his professional judgment, facilitating the contemplation of information recognized in the scientific community. The article describes one of these instruments, the HCR-20, recently translated into Spanish. The instrument evaluates historical (past), clinical (present) and environmental (future) dimensions.
