dc.description.abstractenglish | Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most prevalent mental disorder in the general population. In outpatient and hospitalized patients with long-term medical illnesses, the prevalence is higher than in the general population. Objective: Determine the prevalence of MDD in hospitalized patients. Method: A cross-sectional prevalence study was carried out, which included 100 patients over 50 years of age hospitalized from an internal medicine (IM) service; Sociodemographic variables were described and the structured clinical interview for axis I disorders (SCID-I) was performed to diagnose MDD and the family APGAR to evaluate the degree of its function. Results: The prevalence of MDD was 38%, a strong association was found with chronic disease, having more than four medical diagnoses, being employed and without a partner. Conclusions: The prevalence of MDD in patients hospitalized for MI is high and the presence of chronic diseases, more than four medical diagnoses, being employed and without a partner is associated with MDD in hospitalized patients.
