Although its etiology is not known with certainty, studies carried out to date point to endothelial dysfunction as a critical factor in the genesis, development and complications of this disease. Among the most studied factors is the phenomenon of lipid peroxidation, which in turn may be a consequence of an increase in the pregnant woman's circulating lipids, particularly triacylglycerols. This article describes the possible role of lipids in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia and the current evidence about the phenomenon of hypertriglyceridemia in preeclamptic women.
