US) is the most used imaging method, in addition to mammography, for the evaluation of breast lesions, justified by its low cost, easy access by women who require it, absence of ionizing radiation and its ability to differentiate cystic from solid lesions. Additionally, it accurately evaluates the subcutaneous cellular tissue and the armpits, which makes it possible to detect other pathologies such as sebaceous cysts, lymph nodes or abscesses. The current indications are initial evaluation of palpable lesions in women under 30 years of age, characterization of cystic lesions, identification and characterization of palpable and non-palpable mammographic abnormalities in older women, as a guide in interventional procedures, evaluation of problems associated with breast implants, Breast evaluation in pregnant women. Its main limitations are the lack of reproducibility of the findings in the various studies, incidental findings, high rate of false positives and its high dependence on the operator. The ultrasonographic BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Report and Data System) is of great importance for the classification of injuries and standardization of behaviors. The objective of this article is to review the indications for breast US, the classification of lesions and the recommendations according to these findings.
