dc.description.abstractEl presente estudio tuvo como propósito revisar de manera sistemática los estudios llevados a cabo en paÍses de Europa, Estados Unidos, Latinoamérica y el Caribe sobre actitudes hacia el trastorno mental y hacia la búsqueda de ayuda profesional en caso de trastornos mentales, sus convergencias, divergencias, limitaciones, tendencias y logros. La revisión sistemática siguió la metodologÍa de investigación documental. Se llevó a cabo la búsqueda de estudios desde 1962 a 2006, en las bases de datos Ebsco y Proquestempleando las palabras clave "attitudes about mental illness ", "perceptions and beliefs about mental disorders ", "psychological help-seeking attitudes " y "attitudes toward seeking psychological help ". La estrategia de búsqueda arrojó 160 artÍculos; 38 artÍculos cumplieron Þnalmente con los criterios para ser considerados enla revisión, de estos, 21 se encontraron en la base Proquest y los restantes en Ebsco. La revisión pone en evidencia el uso de diseños de muestreo no probabilÍsticos, limitaciones para la generalización de los hallazgos, pobre información sobre las caracterÍsticas sociodemográÞcas de las muestras, instrumentos muy variados que diÞcultan la comparación. Se hallaron actitudes predominantemente favorables hacia el trastorno mental y hacia la búsqueda de ayuda profesional especialmente en mujeres de zona urbanas. Se halló predominancia de los estudios con población de grandes centros urbanos en detrimento de zonas rurales.[Alvarez LY, PernÍa LC. The systematic review followed the desk research methodology. A search for studies was carried out from 1962 to 2006, in the Ebsco and Proqueste databases using the keywords "attitudes about mental illness", "perceptions and beliefs about mental disorders", "psychological help-seeking attitudes" and "attitudes toward seeking psychological help ". The search strategy yielded 160 articles; 38 articles finally met the criteria to be considered in the review, of these, 21 were found in the Proquest database and the remaining in Ebsco. The review highlights the use of non-probabilistic sampling designs, limitations for the generalization of the findings, poor information on the sociodemographic characteristics of the samples, and very varied instruments that make the comparison difficult. Predominantly favorable attitudes towards mental disorder and seeking professional help were found especially in urban women.
