This literature review seeks to identify the population with BDD who wishes to undergo a procedure. It was found that BDD is more common in late adolescence regardless of sex. Depression is the most common comorbidity. The use of screening tools is recommended to identify these disorders in the pre-surgical consultation, so that the surgeon can offer comprehensive treatment with the advice of a psychiatrist. Severe cases should not be subjected to the aesthetic procedure. The association between a history of a cosmetic procedure and suicide is not clear, but a high psychiatric morbidity is recognized in this population. However, most of the existing studies present major epidemiological inconsistencies.
