dc.description.abstractenglish | Most children with infrequent and difficult bowel movements do not have a primary motility disorder. On the other hand, they have functional fecal retention, a condition generated by the fear of painful defecation. Different published studies document a lower fiber intake in children with constipation. This article is a review of the effects that dietary fiber intake has on gastrointestinal motility. Fiber affects each phase of gastrointestinal motility differently, however the most dramatic effect is on the decrease in transit time and frequency of intestinal movements, a result of the variations it causes in colonic transit time. Dietary fiber is beneficial in the prophylaxis and treatment of functional constipation | eng |
